Buzzoo, the geeky news site that sucks less

January 31st, 2007 by ezran

One fine day, I got to know about Digg.

Another fine day, I got to know about Reddit.

Many fine days followed, me hammering those sites, feeling that I knew everything there was to know in the nerds’ world. Not too long, these sites became addiction.

Soon I started to participate, submitting my own entries. I spent more time eyeing the sites. Now no longer for the news, but more watching my own submissions, watching their ranks. The addiction has turned to be an obsession.

Then I found more sites to watch. Del.icio.us gets to be more and more interesting. Oh and Technorati! Forget not the old favourite Slashdot. And still more sites,. And more sites. Obsession has now turned to misery.

One fine day is no longer fine.

There has to be solution.

Discipline is one. I have to be strict to the eyeballs. Where they should go and when. But there has to be something more. Some technology solution.

Aggregation seems to be the keyword; and it seems not to be new in the geeks world. Diggdot.us (ehm, doggdot.us now) is one. Popurls.com is another. Certainly my problem has been attacked before.

But something was not quite right yet. Most Aggregators seems to just put a bunch of stuff together. There is still a lot of work needed to remember who has what. And to most aggregators, it seems that the Who (the source) is more important than the What (news). This is not right.

So me and some smart friends (rey, rdb, tb, they all are smarter than me) decided that we would do our own mashup. We’d gather news from different sources, and then we’d show them. Oh, and we’d not just do that, we’d look for matches. Stories that are mentioned everywhere worth more attention, right! They’ve made a buzz!!

So we tried our idea, not knowing if it was going to work or not. Maybe matches are hard to come by. How can we reliably harvest them? And how do we match what?
And what do you know ? . . . it’s a zoo out there! Matches are plentyful, and they are certainly interesting to watch. Soon we realized that our site is going to be a zoo. A zoo of the current buzz… It’s a Buzzoo!

And what about other news that don’t make any buzz? We keep them, they are still in our database. Find them out by searching, or by clicking the tags.

You can also keep good stories and talk about them. We know all these Web2.0 trends…
So this is what we have now, quite a humble start, but hopefully something you like. Let us know what you think, kudos and criticisms alike. We’ll continue to improve the site.

Adieu…
